What is Dental Hygiene?

Dental hygiene refers to the practice of keeping your mouth, teeth, and gums clean and healthy to prevent disease. It involves regular brushing and flossing, routine dental check-ups, and professional cleanings. Good dental hygiene helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and bad breath, and contributes to overall health. Maintaining proper dental hygiene is essential for a bright smile and long-lasting oral health.

Our hygienist will thoroughly ‘scale and polish’ your teeth. Also show you the best ways to brush and clean in between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss to remove the bacterial ‘plaque’. When you eat or drink something sugary, the bacteria in the plaque turn the sugar into acid, which may cause tooth decay.

Plaque can also cause gum inflammation (swelling and soreness) if it is not regularly and thoroughly removed. The hard tartar (or ‘calculus’) which builds upon the teeth also starts off as plaque which can lead to gum disease. You will be told which oral care products are the best ones for you to use. The hygienist will probably talk to you about your diet and any habits such as smoking and drinking.

Dental Hygiene FAQs

How can I best take care of my smile at home?
Actions which you can take yourself include brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing at least once a week. Rinsing with mouthwash can also help, as can chewing sugar-free gum after meals.
What else can I do to look after my oral health?
The food and drinks we consume can have a major impact on our teeth and gums, as well as our health in general. Our hygienists have expert dietary knowledge and can talk you through changes you can make to benefit your smile.
Why is it important to keep teeth clean?
If teeth aren’t cleaned effectively then plaque is likely to form on their surface. This mixture of food and bacteria looks like a soft, sticky film and, if left undisturbed, it can harden into tartar. This build up of bacteria irritates and inflames the adjoining gums, making them painful and prone to bleeding. This condition is called gingivitis, which can in turn lead to periodontal disease without the appropriate intervention.
Are dental hygiene appointments good value?
Dental hygiene appointments are extremely good value compared to comparatively expensive restorative treatments required when problems are allowed to develop. Having your teeth regularly cleaned and checked by your dentist or hygienist is the best way to protect your smile… and potentially your finances in the long term.
How often should I visit a dental hygienist?

The recommended frequency of dental hygiene visits varies depending on your oral health needs. Generally, it is advisable to schedule appointments every six months, but your dentist or hygienist may recommend more frequent visits if you have specific conditions like gum disease.

How can a dental hygienist help with bad breath?

Dental hygienists can assess the underlying causes of bad breath and recommend appropriate oral hygiene practices and treatments. They may also identify potential dental issues contributing to halitosis and advise you on how to address them.

Are dental hygienists involved in treating dental emergencies?

Dental hygienists primarily focus on preventive care and oral health maintenance. In case of a dental emergency, you should contact a dentist or seek immediate care from a dental clinic.
